'Radiant In What Makes You Unique:' Kesha Talks Beauty With Bobbi Brown

On this episode of Beyond the Beauty, makeup and beauty legend Bobbi Brown sits down with pop star Kesha, who recently released her own line of beauty products. They get into the process of creating a palette and packaging, Kesha’s worst makeup memory, how she defines beauty, and so much more. She tells Bobbi that makeup and music always went hand-in-hand for her, saying, “It’s kind of the internal and the external expression of yourself.” She was mesmerized by the shiny pants, facepaint, and glitter-glam of icons like Iggy Pop, T. Rex, and Ziggy Stardust when she was a kid, and says that now, putting on her makeup and wigs for her shows “is a little bit part of the superpower, there’s this ritual to it.” Bobbi is renowned for her light, wearable, everyday makeup, but she loves the glittery rainbow Kesha’s created. And they have cruelty-free makeup in common, which they both find very important: “Knowing the integrity behind the brand, then you can have fun with the product,” Kesha says.

Kesha’s view on her own style is that she likes to break rules; if some common wisdom dictates that stripes and plaid don’t go together, she will immediately create a stripes-and-plaid outfit. She’s adventurous with her style, and she hopes people are with her makeup line, too. When Bobbi asks what beauty means to her, she answers easily. “Beauty is happiness and confidence and acceptance, and I really just want to encourage amplifying that with my beauty line and not changing or perfecting or focusing on what makes someone feel insecure,” she tells Bobbi. “I want to make people...feel radiant in what makes them unique.” Bobbi replies, “That’s a good answer! I thought you’d just say glitter and rainbows!”

They talk about how involved they both are in every detail of their products; Bobbi says drily, “Some people would say I’m difficult, I say I’m brilliant!” Kesha laughs, but agrees: “Sometimes you have to be a pain in the a** to get what you want!” Kesha didn’t want to sell anything she wouldn’t wear herself, so she involved her makeup artist, Vittorio Masecchia, in every detail of her own line at first; she laughs that he’s “ready to get weird, but also stop you from yourself.” They talk about the packaging, which she says is partly inspired by the carpet in The Shining, laugh about her Day-Glo look on Saturday Night Live, and discuss her supernatural podcast Kesha and the Creepies; hear all this and more in this great conversation on Beyond the Beauty.
