This is scary - the chemical triclosan has been linked to cancer-cell growth and disrupted development in animals.  Now regulators are reviewing whether it’s safe to put in soap, cutting boards, toys, and even in your mouth in the form of Colgate Total.  It's one of the top-selling toothpastes that uses the antibacterial chemical to head off gum disease.

Colgate says that Colgate Total is safe. However, Colgate did remove triclosan from its Softsoap liquid handsoaps and Palmolive antibacterial dish liquid in 2011, citing changing consumer preferences and superior formulations. It said it has no plans to reformulate Colgate Total, which is the only triclosan toothpaste approved for U.S. sale. and currently, so does the FDA.
