So you’ve just spent a week’s paycheck at the grocery store, now if you can make sure you’ll actually use all this food before it goes bad, you’re all set. This is how you make the most of your shopping trip at the supermarket.
Say farewell to carrot tops - Veggies like carrots and beets look so appealing with their greens still attached up top. But it turns out, those greens zap moisture from the vegetables, so they dry out faster. Snap those tops off and your veggies will last longer.
Stock your fridge like the supermarket - Put your new yogurt, eggs, and cheese behind the old ones in the fridge, so you’re using the older stuff up first.
Open up the snacks - You’ve probably heard people suggest washing and cutting up fruits and vegetables to store them ready-to-eat, but you can apply that to other snacks too. Open your trail mix, nuts, and popcorn and split them into small zip-top bags, so you can grab and go with a serving anytime.
Get the flour out of the bag - Experts suggest storing all flours in glass or airtight containers to keep pests away. Most whole grain flours will last for one to three months at room temperature, or for two to six months in the freezer.
Deal with the bags - If your grocery shopping includes raw meat, fish, or poultry, keep them in a separate plastic bag to avoid leaking juices on your other food. Then make sure to toss those bags when you get home to avoid cross-contamination. And if you’re going green and bringing reusable bags, make sure to wipe them down or wash them out to get rid of some of the bacteria.
